ROWENA WISE

Fri 2nd Aug 8:30pm

Rowena Wise is a Naarm-based artist whose ruminations on love, alienation, and self-empowerment are fast catching attention. Described by CLASH as “carefully etched indie folk”, she delivers songs that have a newfound sense of honesty, holding space for all of life’s beauty and messiness. Inspired by the strong storytelling sensibilities of 60s folk icons, Rowena’s storytelling is like a close friend, offering heady ruminations on love, loss and alienation while giving gentle echoes of courage and empowerment.

To celebrate the release of her debut album Senseless Acts of Beauty, Rowena hits the road this August for a national tour, including a show at Kyneton’s Major Tom’s.

Hailing from the Western Australian surf town of Margaret River, Rowena Wise’s musical journey began at a young age. Together with her mother (a folk musician from Chicago) and father (a luthier who builds the custom guitars she plays today), they performed as a family band throughout her youth, playing folk festivals all over. Now, grown up and living on the opposite coast in Naarm, Rowena is on the precipice of something exciting of her own.

Having gained a burgeoning reputation over the last few years as both a lyricist and performer, Rowena is finally opening her songbook up to the world with a stunning new album, Senseless Acts of Beauty. Inspired by the strong storytelling sensibilities of 60s folk icons, Rowena is making a sound that sits her snugly alongside the likes of Aldous Harding, Julia Jacklin, and Waxahatchee. Produced by Rob Muinos (Didirri, Jess Locke, Julia Jacklin), Senseless Acts of Beauty combines Rowena’s piercing lyricism and soaring melodies with a warm, punchy and organic live band sound.

A new zenith, Rowena’s songs are full of emotional depth, and by allowing a searing honesty to run throughout, she’s being true to herself and the listener with piercing lyricism. Over the album’s ten tracks, she offers heady reflections on heartache and the blurriness of selfhood, yet counters them with warmth and relatability. Hailed as a “menacing force in indie-pop's next generation” (Pilerats), Rowena showcases a raw, earnest power with Senseless Acts of Beauty, cementing herself as a compelling voice in the indie music scene and beyond.

QUIVERS

Fri 14th June 8:30pm

Quivers, of Melbourne, Australia, have been a cathartic jangle pop band for long enough now to get supportive ears at Pitchfork, NPR, JJJ and even the band R.E.M., who once slid into the bands DMs to send fire emojis. Quivers have performed at Dark Mofo, Meadow, Boogie, and SXSW after which they filmed a session for beloved Seattle station KEXP. They have also supported the likes of The Hold Steady, Sonny & the Sunsets, and Methyl Ethel.  Late 2022 saw Quivers love every minute of a much postponed 16-date US tour to celebrate 2nd album Golden Doubt, described by Pitchfork as “like a Go-Betweens with Coachella-conquering ambitions”. With a Bella-sung 7” single, If Only, now nearly sold out, Quivers have finished their next album, 'Oysyer Cuts' set for worldwide release via Merge Records on August 9th, 2024. It sees the band dive into a tougher and more expansive pop with both Bella and Sam sharing singing duties. There’s more angular than jangular guitars now, 1970s synth drones, and more songs about hometowns, friendship, giving in to love, and swimming away from grief. Quivers’ come alive on tour; four people and voices that build it up to let it fall apart and then build it back up again.

CARAVANS

Sat 1st June 8:30pm

"Kyneton four-piece band "Caravans" return to their favourite local haunt for an early winter warmer gig.  Led by guitarist and vocalist Paul Otway, the line-up is rounded out by Bradd Bamford on drums; Paul Binns on bass guitar and keys; and Matt Wallace on guitar.  The band showcase Otway's original work, that weaves an introspective and evocative tapestry against a backdrop of rock, blues and the occasional foray into outlaw country.  Always a fun gig, the band love to book-end their performances with nods to some of their formative influences including Neil Young, The Rolling Stones and Kris Kristofferson."

RELAYS with THE MODS

Fri 31st May 8:30pm

**Introducing Relays: The Raw and Unapologetic Voice of Aussie Bogan Punk**

Bendigo, Australia - May 8, 2024 - Relays, the fiery three-piece punk band straight out of Dja Dja Wurrung country, is here to shake up the Australian music scene. Drawing inspiration from punk legends like Dead Kennedys, Wipers, and Cosmic Psychos, Relays infuse their own raw attitude into every chord.

Comprised of producer Shann Lions, drummer Mik Weird, and the sensational 23-year-old autistic wunderkind, Stanley Knife, on vocals and bass, Relays packs a punch that demands attention.

In just five months, Relays has left an indelible mark on the music landscape. With over 20,000 combined plays on Spotify from their three digital singles released in 2024 alone, the band's momentum is unstoppable. Their blistering live performances in Melbourne, Beechworth, and hometown Bendigo have only fueled their rise.I

Recently, Relays completed their highly anticipated debut album at Head Gap Studio Preston, capturing the raw essence of life in regional Australia. Produced by Shann Lions and written collectively by the band, the album is a gritty reflection of their unfiltered sound.

What sets Relays apart is their commitment to authenticity. Forgoing studio gimmicks, the band opted for a live recording approach, capturing their raw energy and chemistry on two-inch tape.

As they gear up for the release of their debut album in the last quarter of 2024, Relays shows no signs of slowing down. To celebrate the release of their fifth single, "Kids Fattening Centre," on May 30th, the band is embarking on a Victorian Tour alongside some of their favorite up-and-coming acts.

ELYSIUM, JUNKYARD WIZARDS & SACK OF FLOUR

Sat 25th May 8:30pm

With their disinterest in musics and society’s layers, Elysium still sit with their people and bring them along whilst on their journey to reach the top.

Elysium are a thrash/groove metal band that since forming in ‘22 have always persisted to leave the crowd astonished and energised. Frontman Hamish always keeps the crowd on their feet (excluding the times they crowdsurf). Including the guitarist, Jono’s amp roars as bassist Alex Kelessy jumps and prances around as Ben Taylor smashes and crashes his drums. This step by step, procedure, pattern, backwards or forwards, creates the one and only… Elysium.

RADIO FREE ALICE

Sat 13th April 8:30pm

Radio Free Alice return for a final headline show in Melbourne before they head to the UK for a few months.  They'll have ne merch and will celebrate their latest EP with the launch of brand new vinyl print run.

With an operatic swagger angular guitar driven sound, Melbourne’s Radio Free Alice emerged with an art school musical palette, painted from a suburban Australian canvas.  Immediate and arresting rock arrangements from the 4 piece band meld with frontman Noah Learmonth’s distinctive yearning throaty vocal, harking to the stylings of Ian Curtis and Robert Smith.  Guitars with clean tones and clever notes, melodic bass lines, urgent drumbeats, and the occasional sax translate the band’s DIY recordings to an energetic, charismatic live show from the young quartet.

Following 2023 singles “Paris Is Gone” and “Look What You’ve Done”, which have received support from triple j, FBi and 3RRR, the band have opened for Sorry, Django Django, The Snuts and a sold out four week residency at inner Melbourne’s Nighthawk.  The band’s captivating live show saw them emerge from Brisbane’s BIGSOUND showcase as one of the breakout artists for the year, as they lead into SXSW Sydney and a run of summer shows around Australia.  More music and an EP to come from this exciting new young talent this year.
