ARCHER with Scott Cook & The Second Chances

Sat 18th March 8:30pm

Archer returns to Australia after his sold out tour of Canada including an acclaimed support of Martha Wainwright.
In celebration of the launch of his new 7 inch "My Little Sweet Aussie Sweetheart" Archer is putting on his boots and heading out to walk the riverbanks and ranges, highways and backlanes of his beloved home country for a series of intimate shows. Don't miss your chance to hear this rare deep and true voice, the king of the galleys, singer of the great open sky, heartbreaker, kangaroo whisperer and tale teller.

Scott Cook & the Second Chances - A roots balladeer with a rare personal warmth, Canada's Scott Cook has distilled the stories collected over a decade of near-incessant touring across Canada, the USA, Europe, Asia, and Australia into straight-talking, keenly observant verse. His fourth release, One More Time Around, was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award, and its opening track "Pass It Along" won the Folk and Acoustic category in the 2013 UK Songwriting Contest, with UK magazine Maverick Country naming him "one of Canada's most inspiring and imaginative storytellers".

KARL S. WILLIAMS

Sat Feb 11th 8:30pm special guest Joshua Seymour

Born at a young age into a non-musical family, and named after a criminal from the future, none can be bothered to unravel the twisted line that led Karl S. Williams to The Blues and perverted him into a guitar-slinging, banjo-wielding freak with a penchant for Hell fire, Heavenly salvation, and writing about himself in the third person.

PRETTY CITY and BEN WRIGHT SMITH

Sat 17th Dec 8:30pm $15

The three piece Melbourne lads Pretty City, combine Smashing Pumpkins-esque fuzzed out guitars with washy, reverb drenched vocals to produce a dreamy yet powerful rock sound. They say they are influenced by Trent’s band from the iconic 90s film Reality Bites, and aspire to be like Mystic Spiral from Daria.

The band hit this year’s SXSW (2016), which saw them capitalise on their undeniable buzz. As well as scores of press reviews and interviews, their festival culminated in their official showcase reaching venue capacity to rave reviews from Glamglare, Noisy, the AU Review, to name a few.

Indie Pop artist Ben Wright Smith returns to Major Tom's with his new single 'Sand Grabber', which is receiving rave reviews and high rotation on Triple J.

FREYA JOSEPHINE HOLLICK

SAT DEC 10TH 8:30PM $10 special guest Charm OF Finches

Freya Josephine Hollick is an Old-Timey, Country, Folk singer/songwriter from the Victorian Goldfields. She was born and raised in Ballarat, and although she has tried her hand at city living, Ballarat and rural Victoria are where she is most at home. Freya has written and performed for many years in many different styles, though has always had her roots in folk music, coming to earlier 20th Century folk, blues and country music through a hunger for knowledge of how and from where modern music evolved. Well versed in all kinds of music, Freya has followed a path back to a time that holds true to her voice, her songwriting and her story. Freya's voice has been described as haunting, as both powerful and fragile, it is truly a voice unlike any other, and one that is of another time.

After having taken a two year break from gigging and recording to have a baby (her beautiful daughter, Opal), Freya has returned to the country music scene with gusto, playing many shows throughout Australia in the lead up to the unveiling of her new record The Unceremonious Junking of Me (due for release October 2016 through Heart of the Rat Records).

The album was recorded over three days in Ballarat's Historical Main Road building, The Main Bar, by engineer Myles Mumford (Rolling Stock Recording Rooms, Collingwood). This record bears particular significance for Freya as all the tracks on this album were recorded live to tape, no overdubs, no fancy business, just beautiful old equipment, intimate playing, and a first musical venture for her post-birth.

The collection of songs that will appear on her upcoming record are full of old-world charm and heartache, spawned from the experience of childbearing, motherhood and failed relationships. The follow up to 2014’s Beauty and Sorrow, is steeped in the darkness of the country and blues of yesteryear, intertwined with a saccharine of fragile folkisms.

The Unceremonious Junking of Me is an album of sweet sounding country tunes written and performed by Freya with accompaniment from Pete Fidler on Dobro and Mandolin, and Kat Mear on Fiddle.

BROADS

SAT DEC 3RD 8:30PM special guest Dan Lethbridge $10

Kelly Day and Jane Hendry are Broads. With a celebrated EP under their belt, a list of collaborators including Big Smoke, Cash Savage and Henry Wagons, and a live show just as hypnotic in intimate Melbourne venues as on the festival stages of Boogie, Woodford and Cygnet, Broads are a band continually escalating their creative powers.

"The Day/Hendry connection is electric in their ability to filter raw emotion through graceful and elegant simplicity" Lonesome Review

Now about to hit the road in support of “Nod Off, Dream”, the first single from their long anticipated album Vacancy (due out early 2017), Broads will be backed for the first time by a crack band including members of Big Smoke and Wallflower.

 NOD OFF, DREAM

The first single from the eagerly anticipated full-length album is “Nod Off, Dream”. A showcase of lush vocals, this twisted lullaby has one foot in reality and the other firmly planted in the dark subconscious. Featuring a full band including Alex O’Gorman on bass, Sarah Galdes on drums and a full complement of dreamy backing vocals, ‘Nod Off, Dream’ is Broads as you have never heard them before.

Broads will launch the single in Melbourne at The Toff in Town on 12 November with a full band, with Alex O’Gorman on bass, Luke Brennan on drums, Matt Dixon and Dan Lethbridge on electric guitars. With support from very special guests Baby Blue and Matt Wicking, the night promises to be completely lush!

Broads will then take the single on the road, heading up the east coast through the rest of November before hitting Tasmania and South Australia. Make sure you catch them in your town.
